John Geiger’s big claim to fame came in 2015, with his first wave of custom Nike Air Force 1s, in a series he called “Misplaced Checks”. Now, it seems like those customs could become a reality in the near future, with Geiger sharing several early looks at a new pair over the past week.
In the mid 2010s, the sneaker world was at a turning point. Sneakers were rapidly growing more popular, with everyday consumers becoming more conspicuous in their footwear purchases, and brands like adidas and New Balance challenging Nike for the throne. With social media then fully integrated into our lives, sharing sneakers online was normal, and customs makers were able to show their work to a much, much wider audience. One of these customizers was John Geiger, whose “Misplaced Checks” take on the Air Force 1 took over the space in 2015.
Geiger released several batches of his custom AF1s to the world, eventually moving on to create his own successful brand, further bridging the gap between fan and industry insider. This week, Geiger shared several teaser images of a new pair of the “Misplaced Checks” AF1. When asked if they were coming back, he simply responded with a cryptic “they ain’t a custom”. This simple statement has many of us, understandably, questioning: is Geiger making an official Nike collab? This would be an interesting development, as Nike sued JG in 2021 for copyright infringement, before the two sides came to an agreement in 2022 and the suit was dropped. Is this the result of that agreement? We’ll have to wait and see.
JOHN GEIGER X NIKE AIR FORCE 1 “MISPLACED CHECKS” RELEASE INFORMATION
The potential upcoming release from John Geiger and Nike has not been made official yet, but we hope to see this custom-turned-reality release to the public sometime in 2025. Formerly a personal project for Geiger that resulted in a lawsuit from Nike, his hints on social media recently point to a possible collaboration between him and the Swoosh. We will update this article as more information is available.
