Summer has barely even started, and it’s already been a busy season for one Shawn Carter. Increasingly selective with appearances and comments in recent years, the multi-time Grammy winner broke that streak by sitting for a rangy interview to kick off a new era of public availability. Of course, his actual performances have been even more noteworthy, responding to potshots and reasserting his position at the Roots Picnic in Philadelphia.

Returning to his hometown is looming as the most consequential event of this spree, with three nights at Yankee Stadium queued up in what’s been billed as individual career retrospectives. It’s the first night, looking back at 30 years of Reasonable Doubt, that’s of interest today. Stills of activations in DUMBO and the heart of Lower Manhattan have washed over social media feeds, with books, tees, jerseys, and custom gear centered around the seminal 1996 album and the legacy he’s built since then.

Brooklyn’s Ryan Witherspoon previewed what’s of most interest to us: a special-edition version of the Nike Air Force 1 Low aligned with the “JAY-Z 30” mission, carrying a blue Roc-A-Fella Records brand stamp on the heel. For historians, that touch is especially important. The original 1999 promo sample quickly became one of the most legendary sneakers of its era, returning for a limited run in 2017. Samples from the intervening period, like the one crafted for The Black Album, have similarly captured that vaunted status.
