Nike SB is giving the Air Force 1 a fresh start, and skate shops around the world are playing a major role in its rollout. After officially introducing the Nike SB Air Force 1 earlier this year, the brand is launching a series of collaborations inspired by the original “Color of the Month” program that helped keep the Air Force 1 alive during the 1980s and early 2000s. One of the first retailers to receive its own version is Instant Skateboards, the longtime skate shop based in Tokyo, Japan.
Instant Skateboards has been one of Japan’s most influential skate retailers since opening in Shibuya in 1995. Throughout the years, the shop has collaborated with Nike SB on multiple projects, including memorable SB Dunk releases.
This Nike Air Force 1 Low is dressed in a Black, Game Royal, and White color scheme. Black suede covers nearly the entire upper, replacing the traditional leather construction found on the classic Air Force 1. Game Royal lands on the Swoosh, heel tab, and Nike SB branding around the heel, creating a color blocking that reminds many fans of the legendary “J-Pack” SB Dunks. The shoes also feature the shop’s branding on the side.
Unlike the original Air Force 1, the Nike SB version has been completely reworked for skateboarding. Nike lowered the midsole to improve board feel while retaining the signature Air unit in the heel for impact protection. The outsole also features a modified herringbone traction pattern designed specifically for grip and flexibility on a skateboard.
