G-Shock's 40th Anniversary Watches

G-Shock is a line of watches established in 1983 by Kikuo Ibe. The idea came to Ibe when he accidentally broke a pocket watch his father had given him. This unfortunate event caused Ibe to set out to create an indestructible watch. When making the first G-Shock, he ensured that it passed the triple ten philosophy: water-resistant to 10 bar, minimum 10-year battery life, and could survive a 10-meter drop. The initial designs were primarily made for sports, military, and outdoor activities but have since grown into recognizable fashion accessories. The design crosses the line between military aesthetics and streetwear and has grown to become a cultural phenomenon over the decades. G-Shock established a new genre of toughness in watches with the first model DW-5000C. Reaching the 40th anniversary milestone this year, this editorial will highlight iconic collaborations and the special edition 40th anniversary style from this year.    The Coca-Cola x G-Shock collaboration came out in August of this year. The duo of limited edition G-Shock watches are inspired by the iconic American soda company. The pair of new collaboration pieces are based upon two recognizable G-Shock silhouettes, the DW5600 and the DW6900. They both receive a full Coca-Cola-themed aesthetic overhaul, and both watches come in special packaging that feature an outer box and tin adorned with Coca-Cola's logo and iconic red and white color scheme.     The DW5600 variant takes its visual inspiration from the soda company’s instantly recognizable white and red logo. The bold and striking design combines G-SHOCK’s toughness and durability with Coca-Cola’s rich history and invigorating spirit. The strap and bezel are both made from bright red resin with white text and a large white Coca-Cola logo printed on the 12 o’clock side, while the dial plate surrounding the display is white with the Coca-Cola logo printed in red at the top, and Casio’s logo in black appearing below the LCD screen.      The DW6900 version features a translucent design that recalls the appearance of Coca-Cola’s famous green-tinted glass bottles. Both the bezel and strap are constructed from translucent green resin while the text on the bezel and the Coca-Cola logo on the strap keeper are both printed in white — just like the logo on a bottle of Coke. While the LCD screen is the standard black-on-gray variety, the dial plate surrounding it is white with the Coca-Cola logo printed in red at the very top. When the backlight is activated, the display glows green with a red Coke bottle silhouette appearing in the center.        G-Shock took a unique approach to its selection of 40th Anniversary designs, including the DW6940RX-7 Clear Remix. Molded after other iconic G-Shock silhouettes, this popular watch style is deconstructed with see-through components. Transparent materials for the band, case, dial, LCD, and buttons provide a behind-the-scenes view of the module substrate printed with the G-Shock logo. The case back features the 40th logo, and the band loop is engraved with four stars in a nod to this special anniversary. This design is the first-ever use of a see-through case made of clear glass fiber diamide.   The FEATURE x G-Shock '24HRS in Las Vegas' watch is another 40th Anniversary collaboration from this year and pays homage to the city in which FEATURE was founded.
