The work ethic of New Balance has been truly unmatched this year, so much to the point that this surely isn’t your first time hearing us make the claim. New models have been abundant throughout 2026 across almost every category they represent: formal with the 1890A, running with the Ellipse, basketball with the P400, fashion-forward low-pro with the 204V, and a seemingly endless cadre of everyday kicks (the New Balance 1954R looming for imminent arrival).
Yet another comes to that lattermost lane as we see first looks at the New Balance 983. It immediately registers as one in the New Balance 9060 lineage, not least because of the eccentric contours of its sole unit and the bulbous ABZORB units embedded within the rubber underfoot, bending and warping to fit those pods. Up top, glossy synthetic panels create their own wavy profile, especially unorthodox with a midfoot network that drapes over an oval-shaped mesh window.
We now know via the Action Bronson New Balance 2811, Ronnie Fieg New Balance 2011, and mashups like the aforementioned 1954R that the Boston brand isn’t shy at all when it comes to patching together of its historical designs for something new. At least to our eye, it appears that this is a silhouette invented out of whole cloth, but as with any product from the Boston brand, there’s a distinct possibility that there are some forgotten silos at work here.
