In just a month and a half, Jordan Brand will finally deliver a retro many fans have been asking for for years. The Jordan 11 “Gamma Blue” — beloved by some and met with indifference by others — returns for the first time ever on December 13th as part of a massive lineup that includes nine total Jordan 11 releases between Holiday 2025 and Spring 2026.
On paper, the sneaker is simple: black mesh and patent leather, icy soles, gold detailing, and bright “Gamma Blue” accents on the Jumpman logos and traction pads. But it’s the shoe’s place in the Air Jordan retro lineage that really opens the door for discussion.
To this day, it’s undeniable that the Jordan 11 carries a unique aura. This is the shoe that went 72–10. This is the shoe MJ won his fourth NBA championship in after stepping away from the game for a year. Most importantly, it’s MJ’s personal favorite — Tinker Hatfield’s basketball Mona Lisa, if you will. All of that still rings true, but when the “Gamma” 11s first released in 2013, the model was somehow even more sacred. Back then, Jordan Brand dropped just one (sometimes two) AJ11 each holiday season — a level of reverence no other silhouette enjoyed — and the chosen colorways typically stuck closely to the original playbook.
That’s what made the “Gamma Blue” release such a cultural line in the sand. It wasn’t a color MJ wore on court. It wasn’t part of the legacy blueprint. It was something new — and it helped define a generational split between traditionalists and a new wave of sneakerheads.
