All-Star Weekend was a banner stretch for Mr. Anthony Edwards. Even amid a stacked run of Three Stripes footwear, it was likely his Hellstar AE2 that stole the show for the German giant, while his effort and intensity were crucial to restoring the Sunday showcase to a level of entertainment and respectability that Silver and co. had been chasing for years. Oh, and did we mention he went home with the W and the MVP trophy, to boot?
Clearly, it’s a great time to be associated with the Georgia product, something that we’ve known when it comes to adidas since his first signature shoe ran rampant in “sneaker of the year” conversations. As his second marches on, he and his footwear partner are set to release a takedown/budget model to fill out his line, the adidas Believe That 1. Obviously spinning off the official motto of the Three Stripes’ branding campaign, the model here flexes two introductory colorways: one a sleek all-black and one closer to the “Georgia Peach” tint that’s been a frequent choice through two sig shoes.
On a compositional level, it’s easy to see that the AE1 is the starting point for this design, tipped off with the V-shaped fabric sheath that surrounds the lace unit. The chunky overall profile pushes a bit closer to step 2, yet to our knowledge, this is an overall new chapter rather than a “budget” redux of either silhouette. Entirely new is the synthetic cage for breathability and containment on the sidewalls. Simplistic traction defines the sole unit, with Edwards’ treeline logo embedded into that, while the inner/outer split that’s been a staple of adidas’ recent basketball efforts sticks around here. Dreamstrike cushioning is confirmed.
Crucially, this isn’t a novel play in adidas’ modern history; the DAME Exptly offered a cheaper way into Lillard’s oeuvre before the price tag of his latest few models crept toward the bottom of the price ladder within adidas’ Hoops catalog. The adidas Anthony Edwards Believe That is expected to release on June 1st, retailing for $100 in adult sizing and $80 in kids’.
