The Nike Sabrina line has quickly established itself as one of the premier signature franchises in basketball, earning praise from everyone from WNBA stars to NBA players for its blend of performance, comfort, and accessibility. As the Sabrina 4 prepares to launch, Sneaker News caught up with Sabrina Ionescu to discuss the latest evolution of her signature shoe, from the introduction of Nike FlyPlate technology to her hands-on role in designing each colorway. The New York Liberty guard also shared her thoughts on the city’s current basketball renaissance and the energy surrounding the defending WNBA champions as they pursue another title.

Below, Ionescu answers three questions to give fans a deeper understanding of the Nike Sabrina 4, the collaborative process behind its design, and the mindset that continues to shape one of basketball’s most compelling signature athletes.

Sneaker News: Through the Sabrina 1, 2, 3, and now the Sabrina 4, the core principles of the line have stayed true to your game. One of the biggest additions this year is FlyPlate, a technology that’s traditionally associated with running. What was that first conversation like when Nike introduced the idea? Was it something they brought to you, or did you have input in bringing it to basketball?

Sabrina Ionescu: It’s always a collaboration, but they definitely came up with the idea first. Obviously Oregon is all about innovation and continuing to figure out ways to improve and be better. The Sabrina shoe line has always been about innovation first, but also comfort. You know what you’re getting when you put the shoe on—a really high-performance basketball shoe.

So when they brought the idea of FlyPlate to me, I was super interested and wanted to learn more about how that sensation in a basketball shoe could increase someone’s performance. You kind of have that feel of a runner on a block, knowing you’re propelling yourself forward. In basketball, you’re always on your toes. You’re jumping, running, changing direction, always moving linearly.

For me, it was like, “Okay, I see the vision.” I think it’s something that’s really going to add to the performance of the shoe. Athletes all around the world are going to feel that sensation and really like it. They’ll feel the support of the technology, but also feel their energy through their feet and into the ground. You want to feel like one with the shoe.

Sneaker News: We’ve already seen a few Sabrina 4 colorways, including the launch “Limelight” pair, the Liberty-inspired edition, and a few others you’ve worn on court. Is there one upcoming colorway you’re especially excited about?

Sabrina Ionescu: I’ve teased a lot already. (Laughs.) But the first launch colorway is always one I’m excited about because it’s the first one fans get to see. “Limelight” really showcases the energy around New York basketball, the women’s game, and where I’m at in my career. That’s always a special moment because it means the launch is finally here.

I help design every single colorway, so I’m excited about all of them. Every year, the Oregon colorway is one I’m especially excited for because Ducks fans always love seeing those colors. I’m also really excited about what people have been creating through Nike By You. We’ve been able to tell so many stories through that platform, not just here but all over the world. Sometimes I see a Nike By You creation and think, “I kind of want that in a PE.”

Sneaker News: Basketball in New York has incredible momentum right now. The Knicks just won a championship, and the Liberty have already brought home a title of their own. Is there any added pressure to keep that celebration going, or do you just focus on yourselves?

Sabrina Ionescu: We’re definitely focused on us, but you can’t ignore it. We were all here during the Knicks’ playoff run, and after they won, we understood what it did for the city. Obviously we won two years ago, so we’ve experienced that feeling too.

The game has continued to grow, New York basketball has continued to grow, and the Knicks winning this year just adds to that excitement. We’re walking down the street now and people are saying, “It’s your guys’ year. You have to do it too.” We feel that energy and buzz.

For us, it’s about controlling what we can control. We’re still early in the season and there’s a lot of basketball left to play. But we also want to do it for the fans because they’ve supported us throughout the last few years. There’s just this energy that you want to continue on.
