New Balance’s naming system, for all the appreciation we have for its search-friendliness, can be a puzzling source when it comes to understanding the story behind new models. In the case of the New Balance 1954R, it comes down to a simple equation: 1906 + 2002 ÷ 2 = 1954.

Official release info sheds some light on how New Balance landed on the name. The 1954R features an upper inspired by both the original New Balance 1906 and 2002, two premium running models from the late 2000s and early 2010s that have gone on to greatly inform the brand’s retro lineup. Given that both heritage models share the same sole unit, the midsole serves as a natural connector, the same one used across other new models like the 1890 and Ronnie Fieg’s 2011.

Three monochrome colorways mark the 1954R’s debut: black, grey, and Sea Salt. Pairs will be available early via SOMEWHERE in Washington D.C. on July 11th (in-store) and July 12th (online), with a wider global release via New Balance and additional retailers arriving July 17th.
