On the scattered occasions in which the original New Balance 2002 came to the surface, be it via archival social media feeds or the odd listing of the OG style, some within the New Balance fanbase responded by wondering aloud when we’d see that initial tooling hit the shelves again.
While the earnest 2002 hasn’t seen a retro yet, little did any of those fans know that we’d be inundated with the maximalist, chunky sole unit from that 2010 silhouette. The New Balance 1890, its 1890A formal offshoot, and the 1954R are all carrying the banner for the ABZORB tooling, with the hybrid model now becoming prolific in its own right. Given the smashed-together composition, combining said tooling underneath with the 890 runner’s layered upper, it’s only right that the silo has made a name for itself with equally eccentric color options. A “Nordic Green” is the latest, blending together olive, teal, and highlighter green for most of its real estate, before swapping to cooler shades on the cut-out heel counter and the teardrop synthetic overlays that run across the toe.
At overseas retailers, the New Balance 1890 “Nordic Green” is already listed for a July 1st release date. Whether that’ll hold for US channels is unclear. In the meantime, get a sense for this pair via detailed studio shots ahead.
