The original 2002 needed its “remodeled” offshoot precisely because audiences were reticent to shell out its high retail price, but that exact platform is now inescapable, defining the New Balance 1890, Ronnie Fieg’s New Balance 2011, and the New Balance 1954R.
The exposed ABZORB cushioning and layered composition have made the 1890 a clear attendant of the “visible tech” movement, but mesh and suede materiality push the sneaker closer to other NB inventions than a fully futuristic peer like the New Balance 2000.
