Sometimes the best way forward is to take a step back. That idea has never felt more relevant than it does right now, with a sneaker scene that’s looking squarely to the past to shape the future. Gen Z is embracing the same styles their parents once wore, and in doing so, they’ve turned 2000s tech runners into one of the defining looks of the modern era.
adidas has played as big a role as any brand in capturing that energy. One of the most talked-about releases of the year has been Pharrell’s adidas Jellyfish, a bold, sculpted reinterpretation of the Adistar Cushion 3 from 2005. It’s proof that revisiting the archives is a winning formula – and with that momentum, adidas is digging back into its bag with a revival of one of the era’s defining stability runners.
The adidas Adistar Control 5, first released in 2008, is set to return with the same purposeful shape and runner’s grit that once chewed through miles. This time, it’s ready to own the sidewalk. Get your pair on adidas.com beginning November 15th.

DIVING DEEPER

The Adistar Control 5 holds a proud place in the lineage of adidas stability running shoes. Born from the Adistar series that was first established in 1976 and re-emerged in the early 2000s, each sub-line served a distinct purpose: Cushion for softer landings, Ride for balanced daily miles, and Control for runners who needed structure without losing comfort. By the time the Control 5 arrived in 2008, adidas had perfected the formula, blending some of its best tech with unmistakable German precision.
What reads as “retro tech” today was once cutting edge. An open mesh upper keeps the shoe airy and comfortable, reflective accents provide extra visibility, and a sculpted midsole featuring AdiPRENE+ cushioning, a segmented Ground Control System, and adidas’ 3D TORSION SYSTEM provides stability through the gait cycle. The adidas product team also widen the last at the fore-foot ever so slightly for a more modern fit.
Though the Adistar line eventually gave way to families like Adizero, UltraBOOST, and Supernova, its DNA shaped the future of adidas performance footwear. The Control 5’s 2025 return completes the loop, reviving the proven tech of its time while tapping into the renewed appetite for 2000s runners.
On top of appearing in collections by Sporty & Rich and Mercedes-AMG, the Adistar Control 5 has already built out a strong lineup of general releases.
True to its 2000s roots, the model leans into chrome finishes and bold contrast. Standouts include a “Silver Metallic” pair with a white base and black stripes, and a clean “Core Black” edition that goes with almost anything. For a touch of refinement, there’s also a women’s “Beige” colorway with a soft, champagne-like finish that highlights the silhouette’s lifestyle edge.
Even more options are available now on adidas.com, with plenty more on the way as we turn the page to 2026.
