New Balance has already proven its ability to successfully branch out its retro running/lifestyle franchises. The 2002R, 9060, and particularly the 1906 all feature multiple distinct variations that speak to different aesthetics, helping fuel each model’s broader popularity and place in the sneaker world. The New Balance 1000 is the latest to undergo a noticeable overhaul, here reworked into a trail-inspired style dubbed the 1000G with several key changes.

The first and foremost update is the upper. The top leather overlay is removed and replaced with open mesh netting, with a tighter-knit base layer accented by TPU detailing following underneath. Fabric lace loops give way to a series of metal accents, and oval laces are swapped out for a pull-lacing system. Those two key changes come together to create a more outdoorsy, trail-ready look, though they’re largely cosmetic rather than functional upgrades in all honesty (nothing wrong with that).
