Better Release: Air Jordan 5 “Laney” or Air Jordan 1 Low OG “Elkins”

The partnership between Travis Scott and Jordan Brand has resulted in some of the most sought-after Air Jordan releases since the Houston rapper signed with Nike in 2017. This collaboration is notable not just for its style and hype, but also for the intriguing connection both Scott and Michael Jordan share: the color palettes of their high schools.

The journey began with Jordan Brand in 2000 when they introduced the Air Jordan 5 “Laney”, paying homage to Michael Jordan’s high school, Laney High. The shoe, which last reappeared in 2013, features a clean white leather upper accented by royal blue and varsity maize, echoing Laney High School’s colors. This nod to Jordan’s roots became an iconic release, symbolizing the origin story of one of basketball’s greatest legends.

Fast forward to May 2024, and we see a similar tribute with the Travis Scott x Air Jordan 1 Low OG “Canary”, inspired by the colors of Scott’s alma mater, Elkins High School. This release showcases Scott’s signature reverse Swoosh in a vibrant racer blue. The shoe’s white leather upper is complemented by striking yellow overlays on the forefoot and heel, perfectly capturing Elkins High School’s spirit. Additional Cactus Jack branding on the back heels and insoles adds a personalized touch, cementing the unique collaboration between Scott and Jordan Brand.

Both these Air Jordan releases highlight a fascinating aspect of sneaker culture: the blend of personal history with modern design. The Air Jordan 5 “Laney” and the Travis Scott x Air Jordan 1 Low OG “Canary” not only pay tribute to their respective muses’ high school colors but also symbolize their journeys from high school to global fame.
